The Journey
At around 4 or 5 years of age it was rapidly becoming apparent that I had some fascination with electricity. I attempted to dismantle anything that had wires within. My parents satisfied this urge by acquiring used 'junk' radios from the local radio and TV store. It was free and it deterred me from destroying the family living room TV and radio. The family relocated from Illinois to a farm in NE Missouri in 1954.
It was a brief time until I acquainted myself with the local TV and radio shop to feed my desires. Then one day I got a new idea- why not try to fix it, make it work? I had accumulated numerous parts. One autumn, dad's uncle Wayne arrives with his next door neighbor from Peoria to visit and do some game hunting. Jack Gillette, the neighbor was a ham. I had no idea what that was but Wayne had filled him in about my radio curiosity before arriving. Jack was equipped with several books about electronics - tube manual, 'How to repair TV', a hardbound book with many projects. Wow! Had no idea anything like this existed being out here in the rural cornfields. |
